Cementos Cosmos’ Córdoba cement plant to scale down clinker production

30 November 2021

Spain: Cementos Cosmos plans to scale down the production of clinker at its Córdoba cement plant as a result as the high cost of electricity. The Cordoba Day newspaper has reported that parent company Votorantim Cimentos said that clinker grinding operations at the site will continue to ensure a sufficient cement supply in the region.

The Córdoba cement plant employs 48 people. The company is currently negotiating the situation and the scope of its impacts with the workforce.

National Mining Corporation to establish building materials complex including a cement plant at Bani Walid

Libya: The National Mining Corporation and Abraj Al-Ghad Company have contracted AstroPlan, FLSmidth and Grenzebach for the construction of a five-factory building materials production complex at Bani Walid. The Libya Herald newspaper has reported that the 16,300ha complex will include a new cement plant. The Libyan Ministry of Industry and Materials said that a total of 4000 new jobs will be available at the complex.

Mangal Industries to establish 3Mt/yr cement plant in Kogi state

Nigeria: Mangal Industries has signed a contract with China-based Sinoma International Engineering for the delivery of a 3Mt/yr new integrated cement plant in the northern state of Kogi. The Daily Independent newspaper has reported that the plant will cost US$600m and generate ‘thousands’ of jobs when commissioned in early 2024. Sinoma International Engineering will also build a dedicated 50MW power plant for the plant.

Mangal Industries’ chair Alhaji Dahiru Mangal said “This investment is part of an ambitious investment programme under implementation by Mangal Industries. The factory will rely on the best available technology for cement production in line with highest environmental standards.” He added “Mangal is investing strategically in the Nigerian cement industry, to bridge the huge infrastructure and housing deficit in the largest economy of the region. This investment reinforces Mangal’s commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructural and economic development, and reflects its confidence in the favourable outlook of the economy in the country and the region.”

Cement Corporation of India fails in bid to reopen Adilabad cement plant

India: The Telangana government says that it has failed to persuade the Indian government to reopen the mothballed Cement Corporation of India Adilabad cement plant. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that this is despite an offer by the state’s government to contribute to costs.

IT and Industries Minister Ramon Rao said that the Telangana government aims to create 50,000 new jobs and claimed that the state is the fourth largest contributor to India’s economy.

LafargeHolcim Maroc to launch Agadir-Souss cement plant before 2022

Morocco: LafargeHolcim Maroc says that it is on schedule to commission its new 1.6Mt/yr Agadir-Souss cement plant in Souss-Massa region before 2022. The Ajourd’hui le Maroc newspaper has reported that the plant will rely on artificial intelligence (AI) in its cement production process. The total cost of the project is US$335m. The producer says that, when operational, the plant will create 1400 jobs.

Al-Shahba Cement and National Mining Corporation to build Al-Shahba cement plant

Libya: Ahmed Abuhisa, the Minister of Industry and Minerals, has laid the foundation stone for a new cement plant at Al-Shahba. Al-Shahba Cement and National Mining Corporation have signed a deal to build the 1Mt/yr plant in Cyrenaica region, according to the Libya Herald newspaper. The project is part of the ministry’s plan to localise industry in the country, provide job opportunities for young people and drive development. Al-Shahba, which is 100km from the city of Tobruk, is without paved roads and suffers from water scarcity, limited electricity access and the loss of public services.

Dangote Cement warns public against recruitment scam

Nigeria: Dangote Cement has warned the public that confidence tricksters are using its name to offer ‘jobs’ On social media. The Vanguard newspaper has reported that applicants are then being required to pay an ‘administrative fee’ to the scammers.

Corporate communications directorFrancis Awowole-Browne said, “The job advertisements are entirely false and are intended to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. We are clarifying that we have not engaged any individual or job website to advertise job positions on our behalf and none of the contact details, either phone numbers or email, are those of Dangote Cement.” He added, “At Dangote Cement, we fill job positions through a formal procedure with all career opportunities clearly listed on our own website. Furthermore, we never request candidates to pay a fee before they are considered for any position.”

Lafarge France to convert Contes cement plant into a terminal

08 February 2021

France: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge France plans to stop cement production at its integrated Contes cement plant in Alpes-Maritimes department and convert the site into a terminal instead. France Bleu radio has reported that the company has announced the loss of 65 jobs. The company promised to take measures to avoid forced redundancies, including offering positions at other Lafarge France sites and help with retraining. The union representing workers at the plant says that the total number of jobs at risk is 300. The producer said that its Bouc-Bel-Air (La Malle) integrated cement plant in Bouches-du-Rhône department near Marseille will provide jobs for truck drivers and subcontractors. It said, “This will require additional industrial maintenance and increase logistics needs. These jobs are not threatened, they should even develop."

Six workers will stay on at the Contes facility after the end of cement production.

Haridaspur residents protest lack of local jobs outside Ramco Cements grinding plant in Odisha

21 January 2021

India: Residents of Haridaspur in Jajpur District, Odisha, launched a protest on 20 January 2020 outside Ramco Cement’s 0.9Mt/yr Haridaspur grinding plant. The New Indian Express has reported that the people allege that the company has fail to delivered promised local jobs. They also accuse it of failing to provide concrete roads, drinking water, healthcare and lighting. The company said that it has yet to receive a memorandum of the protestors’ request.

Ramco Cements commissioned the Haridaspur grinding plant in late 2020.

Ciments Calcia to stop clinker production at two plants as part of Euro400m modernisation plan in France

19 November 2020

France: HeidelbergCement’s subsidiary Ciments Calcia plans to stop clinker production at two plants as part of a Euro400m investment and reorganisation programme for several of its sites in France. Around Euro300m of this will be spent at the integrated Airvault cement plant. The company also intends to: convert its integrated Gargenville cement plant into a grinding plant and shut down its kiln systems and quarry operations; convert its integrated Cruas white cement plant into an automated cement terminal for the distribution of white cement; and adapt the organisation at its French headquarters at Guerville. The plan will cut 162 jobs and create 20 new ones.

“As part of our global business excellence initiative, we intend to further optimise effectiveness, processes and structures of our French sites,” said Dominik von Achten, chairman of the managing board of HeidelbergCement. “We want to considerably speed up the modernisation of our plants in order to enhance our performance in France, while ensuring alignment with the goals of the Paris agreement. This is why we focus our initiatives on the main CO2-emitting plants in France.”
