Afghanistan: A Czech company plans to invest US$70m towards building a cement plant in Zenda Jan district of Herat province. A deal is expected to be signed in early April 2017, according to a Sirus Alaf, an Afghan presidential adviser on the economy, quoted by the 1TV Afghanistan television channel. Local companies are also expected to match the foreign investment. The planned plant will have a cement production capacity of 1600t/day.
US: HarbisonWalker International (HWI) plans to build a new monolithic refractories plant at the Point Industrial Park in South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio. The site is subject to completion of the company’s due diligence and finalisation of one additional grant application that is in process. HWI announced in February 2017 that it was spending US$30m on building a new 80,000t/yr refractory plant to start operation by early 2018.
Uganda: Two Kenyan nationals have been killed after a crane collapsed at an expansion project at Tororo cement. Three other workers were also severely injured in the incident, according to the New Vision newspaper. All the workers were working on behalf of a Kenyan construction contractor that is building the upgrade at the site.
Anhui Conch repairs balance sheet in 2016
24 March 2017China: Anhui Conch returned to rising sales revenue and profit in 2016 after a problematic year in 2015 beset by a poor market for cement. Its revenue rose by 9.7% year-on-year to US$8.12bn in 2016 from US$7.40bn in 2015. Its sales volumes of cement and clinker rose by 8% to 277Mt. Its net profit rose by 14% to US$1.24bn from US$1.09bn. The group says that its adoption of a flexible marketing strategy for different regions and plants and a focus on lowering production costs delivered sales growth and operating savings. However, its full year results are in contrast to its ones for the first nine months of 2016, in which it reported small declines in its revenue and net profit.
During the year the cement producer finished building six clinker production lines at Yingjiangyunhan Cement and Yiyang Conch Cement and it completed 18 cement grinding plants at Wenshan Conch Cement and Ganzhou Conch Cement. In addition to purchased the assets of Anhui Chaodong Cement. Outside of China the group completed lines in Indonesia and Myanmar, started buildings projects in Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos and started early work on new projects in Russia and Myanmar. At the end of 2016 the group says it has a clinker and cement production capacity of 244Mt/yr and 313Mt/yr respectively. It also reported that it had completed 15 waste treatment projects by the end of the year to feed cement plant kilns with domestic waste.
Imasa wins contract to build cement plant in Potosí
24 March 2017Bolivia: Imasa, with ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions and Valoriza, has been awarded the contract to build a 1.3Mt/yr cement plant for Empresa Publica Productiva Cementos de Bolivia (ECEBOL) at Chiutara in Potosí. The contract is worth US$241m and it is expected to take three years to complete. President Evo Morales signed the deal with representatives of the European engineering companies.
Imasa is also building a similar sized plant for ECEBOL at Jeruyo, Caracollo that is scheduled to be finished in mid-2018. Elsewhere in Latin America the Spanish engineering firm is building a 2600t/day clinker production line for Unión Cementera Nacional (UCEM) at Riobamba in Ecuador.
President opens Bagheran cement plant in Iran
23 March 2017Iran: President Hassan Rouhani has opened the 1Mt/yr Bagheran cement plant near Birjand in South Khorasan. The plant cost US$160m to build and its output will be supplied domestically as well as to Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. The unit is expected to create around 350 direct jobs.
Emami Cement commissions Panagarh grinding plant
23 March 2017India: Emami Cement has commissioned a 2Mt/yr cement grinding plant at the Panagarh Industrial Park in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. The project cost US$76m, according to the Hindu newspaper. The plant will produce Ordinary Portland Cement, Portland Pozzolana Cement and Portland Slag Cement products under the ‘Emami Double Bull’ brand. The new plant joins Emami Cement’s integrated plant at Risda in Chattisgarh. It is also building another 1.8Mt/yr grinding plant in Odisha.
Arkan closes Emirates Cement plant
21 March 2017UAE: Arkan has closed its Emirates Cement plant in Al Ain blaming increasing gas and electricity costs. The building materials company temporarily closed the plant in late 2016 but this has now become permanent, according to the National newspaper. Production will move to its newer Al Ain Cement plant that is now running at almost full production capacity. The decision to close the older plant is expected save the company US$12m/yr. The Emirates Cement plant was one of the oldest cement plants in the country with operation since the 1970s.
Indonesia: State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno says that President Joko Widodo is expected to inaugurate Semen Indonesia’s Rembang cement plant in April 2017. Soemarno made the comments following a visit to the plant, according to the Jakarta Post. The inauguration of the plant is dependent on environmental clearance, which should be completed in April 2017. However, the plant has been the focus of intense protests by local farmers and both the Supreme Court and a local government ruled to shut down the plant.
Islamic State sets Badoosh cement plant on fire
20 March 2017Iraq: Islamic State militants have set the Badoosh cement plant in western Mosul on fire. Major Ali Mohsen, an officer of the Counter-Terrorism Service, said that the plant had been looted and then set on fire, according to the Iraq News newspaper. He added that security forces had killed 15 militants and wounded three others in local fighting. The clashes are part of the Islamic State group’s action against attempts by Iraqi government forces to retake the region.
