Algeria to stop importing cement in 2017 says minister
01 November 2016Algeria: Abdessalem Bouchouareb, the Minister of Industry and Mining, has said that his country will stop importing cement in 2017. He made the comments at a visit to the China Triumph International Engineering (CTIEC) cement plant being built at Adrar, according to the Algeria Press Service. The plant is nearly 90% complete and due to be commissioned at the end of 2016.
"The year 2017 will mark the end of cement imports in Algeria, with the commissioning of all cement plants across the country, whose total annual production capacity is expected to reach 6Mt," said Bouchouareb. He added that industrial projects will allow the country to achieve self-sufficiency in cement and begin to export it.
Holcim US Hagerstown cement plant celebrates US$96m upgrade
26 October 2016US: Holcim US has officially completed its US$96m upgrade project to its Hagerstown cement plant in Maryland. The two-year modernisation project has helped the plant to adhere to NESHAP environmental rules and has increased production capacity at the site by 0.2Mt/yr.
"A cornerstone of the regional community for 113 years, we recognise the importance of this facility to the Hagerstown community," said John Stull, chief executive officer of US cement operations for LafargeHolcim. "Our investment to modernise clinker production represents our continued commitment to our customers and local manufacturing. The facility will continue to be a strong and reliable partner to the community for many more years to come."
The upgrades to the plant should deliver a more than a 60% reduction to nitrogen oxides (NOx), approximately a 50% reduction to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and more than a 75% reduction to Particulate Matter (PM) emissions from the plant.
New cement plant in Tunisia to open in 2018
26 October 2016Tunisia: A new 1Mt/yr cement plant in Sidi Bouzid is set to open in 2018, according to Director General of Manufacturing Industry Brahim Chebili in an interview with African Manager. The project is budgeted at US$220m and will create 300 jobs.
Cemengal commissions a new Plug&Grind for Cemento Regional
26 October 2016Guatemala: Cemengal has commissioned a new 12t/hr Plug&Grind portable grinding unit for Cemento Regional. The station will supply cement to south and central Guatemala including the capital, Guatemala City. First cement production at the site was marked by the attendance of Roberto Díaz Durán, president and CEO of Cemento Regional, Antonio González Gallego, president and CEO of Cemengal and Moisés Rodríguez Núñez, sales and marketing manager of Cemengal.
Cementos Argos to upgrade San Lorenzo grinding plant
21 October 2016Honduras: Argos Honduras plans to spend US$25m towards upgrading its San Lorenzo grinding plant. The site has a production capacity of 300,000t/yr and it will develop its range of Ordinary Portland Cement products, said Argos Honduras director Harry Abuchaibe to La Prenza newspaper. The plant, formerly known as Cesur Grinding Station, was purchased from Lafarge in 2013 as part of a package of assets acquired at that time. Argos Honduras also operates a 1Mt/yr integrated cement plant in the country at Comayagua.
Maple Leaf applies for licence for captive power plant
17 October 2016Pakistan: Maple Leaf Power has submitted an application to National Electric Power Regulator Authority (NEPRA) for a power generation license for a 40MW coal-based thermal power plant. The plant will be used to supply power to the Maple Leaf Cement plant at Mianwali in Iskanderabad, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan. The project will cost US$52.5m and it expected to start operation in December 2017.
China Machinery Engineering to build cement plant in Iraq
14 October 2016Iraq: China Machinery Engineering Corporation has signed a US$250m deal to build a cement plant at Qarachog. Once operational the unit will produce 6000t/day of clinker. The scope of the contract includes project design, supply, civil construction, installation, training and commissioning. Once construction starts the project will take 22 months to complete.
India: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has demanded that the state government of Meghalaya cancel a public hearing to discuss the construction of a plant by Dalmia Cement at Thangskai scheduled for 25 October 2016. The group is protesting about mining rights to the site, according to the Meghalaya Times.
"We strongly express our opposition and demand that the proposed public hearing for extraction of limestone from Thangskai village by the Dalmia Cement factory is immediately revoked," said HANM- East Jaintia Hills president Ency Shadap. The group has also asked that the state government give a public clarification on its decision to grant permission to the cement company to extract limestone from the district and cited certification issues with the Ministry of Forest & Environment.
Redcliff cement plant to be completed by end of October 2016
12 October 2016Zimbabwe: Mortal Investments Manufacturing Company expects to complete construction of its US$10m cement plant in Redcliff by the end of October 2016. The Chinese investor started construction of the project in August 2016 and testing is set to begin by the end of October 2016, according to the Business Chronicle newspaper. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2016. The plant will use slag to make its cement.
ACC cement grinding plant in Jharkhand to start in November 2016
11 October 2016India: ACC has said that its new cement grinding plant at Sindri, Jharkhand will become operational in November 2016. This follows the start of commercial production of a new clinker production line at its plant at Jamul, Chhattisgarh in July 2016 and the start of that site’s grinding plant on 14 September 2016.
