Sri Lanka: Insee Cement has broken ground on its construction of a 45,000m3-capacity storage facility at Hambantota International Port. When commissioned in early 2023, the facility will store ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) for use in Insee Cement's cement production. Daily News has reported the cost of the facility's construction as US$3m. At 17,300m2, the Hambantota storage facility will be the largest warehouse at any port in Sri Lanka.
Insee Cement chair and CEO Nandana Ekanayake said "Hambantota Port is a vital link in our raw materials supply chain. Insee Cement has been using this port since 2018 and so far we have cleared around 1.7Mt of bulk cargo through the port, of which we did a little over 1Mt in 2021. Today, we laid this foundation as another step to strengthen our partnership with Hambantota International Port Group." Ekanayake concluded "We see great potential in developing channels through Hambantota International Port and we will double our investment in the future."
Ramayapatnam Port construction begins
20 July 2022India: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy has laid the foundation stone for the upcoming Ramayapatnam Port in his state's Nellore district. Phase 1 of the port's construction will cost US$467m and is due to conclude in July 2025. The Hans India newspaper has reported that the new 25Mt/yr-capacity port will ship cement and other goods from four berths. Phase 2 of construction will subsequently increase the number of berths to 15, with a total export capacity of 139Mt/yr.
France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has acquired ABC Broyage, which operates a slag grinding plant in North Dordogne. The producer says that ABC Broyage will import granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) via La Rochelle and supply ground GBFS to its H1 and H2 green cement plants in Bournezeau. This will give Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies self-sufficiency in its raw materials processing.
Co-founders Julien Blanchard and David Hoffmann said “Managing our supply chain has always been one of Hoffmann Green's strategic priorities. After securing our supplies of co-products and their storage, we are now focusing on optimising their processing through the acquisition of ABC Broyage and the development of vertical integration.” Blanchard and Hoffmann noted that, besides strengthening the company’s control over its raw materials supply, ABC Broyage’s slag grinding capacity also secures its margins in the ‘current highly inflationary context.’
Sweden: UK-based Samson Materials Handling is supplying an Eco Hopper product for installation at the Port of Slite in Gotland. The hopper will be designed to receive clinker, limestone, coal and refuse-derived (RDF) fuel pellets. These materials will be unloaded at the quay area via crane grabs. The hopper will then discharge direct to trucks via a telescopic chute.
The Eco Hopper installation under normal operating conditions and based on the client’s grab sizes and cycle time, will achieve peak discharging rates of: 353t/hr - based on clinker with a bulk density of 1.4 t/m³; 454t/hr - based on limestone with a bulk material density range of 1.8 t/m³; and 420t/hr - based on RDF Pellets with a bulk material density of 0.6 t/m³.
The Eco Hopper product design concept comprises of a specialised reception hopper unit incorporating Integral filter arrangement with a reverse jet filter media cleaning system which returns all material back in to the material stream. In addition, the inlet system of the hopper is based on the Samson Flex-Flap design which reduces the volume of air necessary to control dust both from the opening grab and displaced air from material falling into the inner hopper below. This contributes to the reduction of airflow reducing filter and power requirements of the equipment.
Commissioning and operator training will be provided by Aumund Group Field Services.
Sri Lanka: Lanwa Sanstha Cement has successfully commissioned its 2.8Mt/yr Hambantota grinding plant in the Mirijjawila Export Processing Zone. Daily News (Sri Lanka) has reported that the facility is equipped with two bridge ship unloaders and an automated stacker reclaimer yard. It will produce the company’s full range of cements, including ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Portland composite cement (PPC) and blended hydraulic cement (BHC) catering to the rising local demand from landmark projects including the Port City and the network of expressways.
France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has signed a 25-year occupation permit in the port of La Rochelle. The agreement will allow the company to build storage silos at the port near to its Bournezeau plant. Construction of the first two 3500t silos will begin in mid-2022 and are expected to be completed in the spring of 2023. The company intends to build a further two silos subsequently. The project investment is around Euro10m.
The cement producer says it met its target and sold 10,000t of cement in 2021. Sales were mainly of its H-UKR blast-furnace slag product.
Swecem orders mobile ship unloader from Bruks Siwertell
16 February 2022Sweden: Swecem has ordered a 10 000 S type road-mobile ship unloader from Bruks Siwertell for cement handling at the Port of Helsingborg. The unit will have a continuous cement unloading capacity of 300t/hr and is able to discharge vessels up to around 10,000dwt. It will be delivered fully assembled to the operator’s import terminal in May 2022.
Cement exports resume from the Port of Malaga
25 January 2022Spain: Bulk cement exports have resumed from the Port of Malaga for the first time since September 2021. The Panamanian-flagged Grit Cement II docked at the port in mid-January 2022 to collect a consignment of 8000t, according to Málaga Hoy. Trade in cement from the port stopped in the autumn of 2021 when HeildebergCement sold the Southern Spain business of its FYM subsidiary to Brazil-based Votorantim Cimentos. Prior to the reopening, ships from the port exported cement to the Port of Banjul in Gambia.
Ghana: The Ministry of Health has responded to criticism from the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers (COCMAG) about disinfection measures being used at ports. It said that it was being used to on the exterior of imported goods and cargo to control or kill infectious agents. It added that the procedure was being implemented on any vehicle that crossed designated biosecurity zones without exception.
“It is obvious that COCMAG, of which you are the executive secretary, does not have much information about the disinfection health service, its applications and the benefits of such a service,” said the ministry in a statement in response to comments in the local press by COCMAG’s leader George Dawson-Ahmoah. It added that the fee for the service was to protect the local economy from the effects of diseases such as Ebola and Covid-19 and that sea ports were, “one of the most infected areas in the country.”
COCMAG has lobbied the government to scrap the disinfection or fumigation levy on cement imports at the country’s ports. It argues that such measures are unnecessary for dry cargo such as clinker, limestone, and other cement raw materials, according to the Ghana News Agency. The levy adds a reported US$0.50/t of cement.
Puerto Rico: Cemex Puerto Rico has extended its contract with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority by 20 years. The subsidiary of Mexico-based Cemex uses Pier 16 of the Port of San Juan. Joel A Pizá Batiz, the executive director of the port authority, said that data from the Development Bank Economic showed that country had a cement demand of 590,000t in 2020. He added that Cemex’s investment in the local economy was over US$400m and it injects US$20m/yr into the local economy. Cemex operates the Ponce plant in Puerto Rico. It switched to grinding cement in 2018.
