Claudius Peters commissions silo and discharge equipment for Bega in Lithuania

Lithuania: Claudius Peters has commissioned a turnkey cement silo and discharge equipment for stevedoring company Bega at the Port of Klaipėda. Its scope of supply comprised a rail car unloading system and a storage silo with pneumatic conveying for ship loading to unload three railcars simultaneously up to a capacity of 200t/hr. The storage silo is a Claudius Peters 3300T Conventional Cone cement storage silo 27m high and 12.5m in diameter equipped with a silo bottom fluidisation system.

The pneumatic conveying system utilises a size 350 Claudius Peters X-pump and enables a total conveying distance of 205m. Originally the project was based on a conveying distance of 148m. During the project phase the customer decided to use two different quays with a conveying distance of 148m and 205m. Commissioning was competed at the end of March 2018.

CK Infrastructure acquires assets in Yunfu City

China: Hong Kong based CK Infrastructure Holdings (CKI) has acquired a 1Mt/yr cement grinding station and three quay berths in Yunfu City, Guangdong, for an investment of US$28.5m. The three berths can handle 3Mt/yr.

The group said it hopes to expand its infrastructure investment portfolio in mainland China. "The acquisition is deemed to be another robust investment with stable returns for CKI," it said in a statement, explaining that demand for cement has been growing on the mainland. "The acquisition of the jetty further realises the vertical integrated production of cement, brings about competitive advantages, and enhances operation efficiency," the statement added.

Diamond Cement signs deal with Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority

Ghana: Diamond Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to build a port at Kedzi in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region. The site is being developed to help the cement producer import raw materials, according to the Ghanaian Times. At present it uses the port of Lome in Togo.

Phinma Group to import cement from Vietnam

20 April 2018

Philippines: Phinma Group plans to buy a cement plant in Mariveles in Bataan and use it as a terminal to discharges exports from Vietnam. President and chief executive officer Ramon del Rosario, Jr added that the site will be operational by May 2019, according to GMA News. The site will be used to import and process 2mt/yr of cement. A deep water port at Mariveles is anticipated to allow Panamax size ships to discharge cement.

Tata International signs contract with Vissai Cement Group for joint-venture in Vietnam

Vietnam: Tata International Singapore has signed a memorandum of understanding with Vissai Cement Group to form a joint venture company in to use the port of Vinh. The deal is expected to create a distribution network for coal, according to the Press Trust of India. The company will also be responsible for Vissai Cement’s coal imports. The joint-venture is expected to benefit from the port’s location as a key gateway for trade into and out of Laos.

Cheetah Cement imports clinker from China

16 February 2018

Namibia: Cheetah Cement has imported 40,000t of clinker from China via the Port of Walvis Bay. The clinker will be transported by truck to the cement producer’s plant in Otjiwarongo, according to the Namibian Sun newspaper. The company is a joint venture between China’s Asia-Africa Business Management and Whale Rock Cement. Its plant was reported ‘complete’ in late 2017 but construction work continued into January 2018.

Valencia Port Authority blocks request by Cemex

Spain: The Valencia Port Authority (APV) has blocked a request by Cemex Spain to expand its operations at the Port of Grau in Valencia. The port authority denied the cement producer because the port is being used for passengers, according to the El Mercantil Valenciano newspaper. However, the port is hoping to find another site for Cemex to use.

Cemex has used the nearby Port of Sagunto for cement and clinker exports since 2014. Exports have since represented 40% of its sales. Production from the company’s Buñol cement plant is exported to countries in the Mediterranean, especially in North Africa.

Algeria to start exporting cement

11 December 2017

Algeria: Trade Minister Mohamed Benmeradi says that Algeria will commence cement exports. An export of Ordinary Portland Cement will be made to Gambia via the port of Arzew, according to the El Moudjahid newspaper. In a separate statement LafargeHolcim Algeria said that it was exporting 16,000t of cement to West Africa from its plant at Oggaz.

Akmenes Cementas terminal to open at Klaipėda in mid-2018

Lithuania: Akmenes Cementas says that its new terminal at the port of Klaipėda will increase its exports to Scandinavia. At present the cement producer sends about 15% or 0.15Mt/yr of its output to the region, according to the Verslo Zinios newspaper. Once completed in the spring of 2018 the terminal will allow exports to be increased to 0.2Mt/yr.

Sanghi Cements to build floating terminal at Kochi Port

12 September 2017

India: Gujarat’s Sanghi Cements is preparing to build a floating terminal at Kochi Port in Kerala. The plan is intended to targeted markets in the south of India, according to The Hindu newspaper. The floating terminal will consist of a berthed ship with a bagging plant on-board and it will have a capacity of 0.3Mt/yr.

“Once the project becomes operational, Kochi Port will be the first major port in the country to have a floating cement terminal,” said AV Ramana, Deputy Chairman of the port. He added that Sanghi Cements has similar facilities in the minor ports of Kutch and Navlakhi in Gujarat and Dharamtar in Maharashtra.

The port is also commissioning more automated cement bagging plants. Ambuja Cement, UltraTech Cement and Zuari Cements each operate units at the port and Penna Cement and Malabar Cements will set up bagging plants in November 2017 and March 2019 respectively. The total capacity of the five units is estimated to be around 3Mt/yr.
