Himachal Pradesh government threatens administrative action against Adani Cement over plant closures

19 December 2022

India: The state government of Himachal Pradesh has issued a show cause notice to Adani Cement subsidiaries ACC and Ambuja Cements. The notice requires the producers to submit grounds for the government not to pursue 'appropriate administrative action' against the companies over the planned closures of their respective 4.4Mt/yr Gagal and 1.6Mt/yr Darlaghat cement plants. The administration says that it is prepared to take such action as is necessary to 'safeguard lives and livelihoods' across the various sectors impacted by the move.

The regional government said, "It is indeed alarming that you have not taken the state government or its functionaries into confidence before taking such a major decision involving the lives and livelihoods of so many stakeholders. Moreover, you have not even tried to approach or exhaust various forums, avenues, or channels available with the state machinery in order to resolve whatever concerns, grievances or issues that they might have."

The state of Himachal Pradesh owns the land on which the Gagal and Darlaghat cement plants are built and the associated limestone reserves.

30 November 2022

Indonesia: Germany-based Beumer Group says that it has secured a contract with Semen Tonasa to supply its 40 - 50kg bag palletising system for the producer's Celukan Bawang cement plant in Bali. The system's multi-programme interface offers custom adjustment between all common packing patterns. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-late 2023.

Beumer Group said "Global influences such as delivery bottlenecks, shortages of raw materials and logistics problems continue to massively disrupt the supply chains. Nevertheless, the system provider will be able to send the machine to the customer in seven months. The target is to install and commission the machine in the third quarter of 2022."

23 November 2022

India: Germany-based Gebr. Pfeiffer and its subsidiary Gebr. Pfeiffer (India) say they have received a follow-up order from Ultratech Cement for additional mills for new clinker production lines at its Kotputli plant in Madhya Pradesh and its Maihar plant in Rajasthan.

At the Kotputli plant it is planning to supply a MVR 5000 R-4 type mill to grind raw material. This mill can grind approximately 740t/hr to a product fineness of 1.0 % R 212µm with a 4800kW drive. FLSmidth books strong orders so far in 2022

08 November 2022

Denmark: Cement plant equipment manufacturer FLSmidth has reported strong fundamentals in its third quarter results for 2022. Its cement order intake increased by 8% year-on-year compared to the third quarter of 2021. Cement sector revenue increased by 7% organically and by 13% when including positive currency exchange effects. This, alongside solid performance from its mining sector, helped the group’s order intake to increase by 11% overall for the quarter.

Group chief executive officer Mikko Keto said, “The positive momentum that we saw in the second quarter has been sustained in the third quarter where we have seen robust growth in both order intake and revenue. The mining business continued to benefit from a healthy backlog and fundamentally positive market conditions, with a 53% growth in service order intake. In addition, the cement business delivered an earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) margin of 3%. The short-term outlook has improved based on stable performance despite an emerging recession.”

Breedon Group, First Graphene and others to develop graphene-enhanced cement

29 September 2022

UK: Breedon Group, together with Australia-based First Graphene, Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure and the University of Manchester, is developing a new reduced-CO2 graphene-enhanced cement. The consortium is currently formulating the cement using varying doses of First Graphene’s PureGRAPH graphene-enhanced grinding aid. The project received a research grant from the UK government earlier in 2022. First Graphene says that the study involves one of the largest commercial trials of its kind to date globally. It is simultaneously collaborating on another similar trial with a Europe-based speciality chemicals producer.

On 29 September 2022, First Graphene launched its latest range of graphene-enhanced cement grinding aids and concrete additives. These join recent launches PureGRAPH AM, an admixture developed in collaboration with South Africa-based Nanoproof/Glade Chemicals, and HexMortar, a dry mortar mix which will be distributed by New Zealand-based GtM Action.

First Graphene says that its cement and concrete segment’s order pipeline totals US$113m in value. Managing director and chief executive officer Michael Bell said “It is pleasing to see our efforts, and those of our collaboration partners, coming to fruition at a commercial scale. One of the primary drivers for the adoption of graphene solutions in this segment is the reduction of CO2 emissions. We’re seeing considerable benefits both in the immediate reductions that can be achieved through the use of graphene-enhanced grinding aids, as well as the potential reductions in concrete usage because of the enhanced physical properties these products provide.” Bell concluded “Working with industry-focused partners such as Nanoproof/Glade Chemicals, GtM Action, Breedon Cement and Fosroc opens the way to an estimated addressable market of more than 12,000t of PureGRAPH across the medium to long term.”
